I am pretty sure this is an ok thing for me to post without violating the non-disclosure agreement. I ran into a prob while creating my soldier. My 82nd "name" will not fit. I believe the name slot only allows up to 15 char.
Can we or have we come up with a compromise on game tags for AA3?
I know there may be some people who can input their name but I cannot. I am just trying to get my stuff up to par before we make the switch.

What we need is for somebody to verify, for sure, whether or not you can change your primary account name and or your soldier name, if such a thing exists. All I saw was just one account name that you log on with, it did not have a 15 character limitation. This is the released game. I do not want to hear about what you did on the beta version. I have yet to be able to sign onto any public servers to see how names appear. Currently the agreement is to use 82nd.Rank=name if there IS a 15 character limit. If primary names can not be changed then, it might be that it should not be 82nd specific. What we are interested in is the name that shows up on the server.

Come on now Rysher. We need good soldiers loike you. Don't go and do anything stupid.
I myself have not had the chance to log on and try AA3 since the release. I have been pretty sick here the past few days. But that is not the topic of discussion here.
To clear things up perhaps about in game names, In a sense you have two names for AA3. You have your account name and your soldier name. As far as I know, the account name has no limitation on how many characters you use. Then you have you soldier name. Those who have played AA3 know that when you log in you have to create a soldier with a name. This is when you have the 15 character min. I think the confusion is what name is actually displayed in game. Is it you account name, like 2.x, or is it your soldier name? It seems to me that AA3 allows you to have one main account with multiple "soldiers" under that account.
Can someone post an article or something about the DEV team getting fired? That would be an interesting read.
So much for all the hype of AA3... *sigh*

These are the true facts.
I thought we had all agreed in our meeting (and even after with Gen Gavin and LTC CJ on ts) that it was 82nd.Rank=Name. Thats what LTC Cena had suggested and what I had made my name to be due to our agreeing.

now, about the name issue - we need to answer these nest few questions in order to be able to solve this dilemma (did i spell it right?)
1 - can ACCOUNT names be changed? (promotions/demotions/platoon swaps...)
2 - can SOLDIER names be changed? (same reasons as in the first brackets)
3 - what is shown in the game on a public server, ACCOUNT or SOLDIER names?
perhaps the lucky beta testers can help us unravel the mystery. the one that will answer these questions solved the problem.

2. At the moment there is no way to change your Soldier Name (the one that shows up on servers) so if you have a name like mine "82nd.SGT=Justin" and get a promotion then your name is FUBAR because "AT THE MOMENT YOU CANNOT CHANGE YOUR NAME WITHOUT CREATING A NEW SOLDIER".
*Note that in the future there may be an option to change names but since the [DEV] team was fired how long do you think it will take them to make an option to change names. My personal opinion its going to take longer than any of us are willing to wait. So the 82nd need to figure out how we are going to make our tags with a 15 character MAX . Also what about New Recruits that have put alot of time in thier soldiers, there is now way to change thier tags without starting over. This issue needs to be addressed right away because we may all be making new accounts for the 82nd
Here are some SS to clear up some of the confusion http://photobucket.com/Justinc187
Once again here is the article about the [DEV] team being fired. If you have some proof otherwise why don't you POST IT. http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/48427/Americas-Army-Development-Studio-Closed

for our current members (the lucky ones to get AA3 up and running...unlike me) I suggest this tag name: 82nd.Name
for the future recruits, this is a problem that needs to be addressed by Col. Shad or maybe even Gen. Gavin.

Originally posted by: 82nd_COD_CPT=Chris I found this online from one of the DEV's...
Quote: I worked as a Dev at AA Emeryville for the last year and a half and I hope I can appeal to your rationality and common sense. I would like you to imagine trying to build a game with an impossible deadline, steadily declining workforce (via firings), A hiring freeze, constantly being fed misinformation, having the "higher ups" completely ignore your weekly plea for either A) more time, or B) more manpower, working a ton of unpaid overtime, pouring your heart and soul into a misadventure only to have the uniformed community scoff at you for uncontrollable variables..... RIGHT when you've just lost your job.
There are problems with the release beyond the devs control. In fact, the bureaucracy is so convoluted that you can't even begin to imagine the breadth and scope of B.S. the devs had to deal with daily. in short, imagine being the subcontractor of a subcontractor of a contractor to the government. Sure Millions of dollars may have been poured into this project, but how much do you think made it to the actual DEV team, the people MAKING the game, after it was filtered by the bureaucracy?
I realize if you are a gamer, you rightly expect a game to work. period. But I would ask that you imagine for a second that you actually DON'T understand what it takes to make this particular game, and you really don't understand the many obstacles that were placed in front of the Devs... in nerdy terms: A Kobiyashi maru.
What I would like you to understand is that the Devs did everything they could, worked a TON of unpaid overtime, put their time and passion into an un-winnable situation, and were effectively stabbed in the back. Many of these guys are my close friends, they have family to take care of, and overpriced rent to deal with. They just came off busting their butts for months, to be let go, without warning. Perhaps a little empathy is in order here.
Almost every multiplayer online game has problems upon release. These problems become exaggerated when a development team is kept in constant turmoil and paranoia via misinformation and a high rate of employee turnover. When the people you trust around you are being let go, it becomes difficult to emotionally invest yourself in the titanic sinking ship. Nonetheless, I can tell you the Devs STILL pushed themselves as hard as they could.
Furthermore, the problem with the game at this point, has everything to do with the authentication servers being slammed, A.K.A not a controllable variable by the Devs. Sure there are bugs, they WERE being fixed, and now you'll be lucky to see any fixes in the near future.
For those of you who think Redstone arsenal will do a better job, well.... I won't have to tell you that you're sadly mistaken because you'll see for yourself.
I'm not sure why i've felt compelled to write this when I'm sure it will get deleted, or even scoffed at further, but I hoped to let the fans know that we tried as hard as we could and are very bummed to see the fruits of our labor shoved at gamers like a heaping pile of crap.
Despite confirming the closure news through official channels, the current OPORD for Army moderators is to deny everything, and then ban those who disagree with their heavy-handed ways
Interesting to see what goes on behind closed doors. Or was this dude just whining?

Just a note: AA2.8 account name management is still available at login.americasarmy.com (the main site itself has changed)
AA3 accounts can be managed from http://login.aa3.americasarmy.com/
I was able to register a 2nd account in addition to my pre-registered aa2 name, but can only login with the newly created account. pre-registered accounts still cannot log in.
I also noticed that "Total Registered Players" shows up in your stats - I am assuming you can have multiple registered user names with the same email address.

Sounds like whining to me. I read somewhere else that their contract was up on the 17th and it wasn't renewed for whatever reason - army budget cuts, consolidation, whatever. (maybe it's not a priority in the Obama administration, ya think?) So sounds like to me they knew it was coming. They were given a contract to do a job, get it done on time and so yes, there was pressure, but I think the guy was whining a bit. If you ask me, I think it was a mistake to ever have programmers based in silicoln valley - high cost of living, high cost of programmers. They were lucky to have a cool job when everyone else around them was shutting doors and leaving town.

Sucks though that they got fired. The game needs a lot more work. But like Rysher said, What can you expect when you don't live up to what you tell people. Of course they are gonna be pissed.
I think the whole release was a failure. It sucks for beta testers like me though. People look at us as like we didn't help enough. We can only report problems and hope someone fixes them. We have nothing to do with the programing at all. Basically we have the unique opportunity to get a free copy of a game before its released. If we find a problem, we report it and keep playing. Thats about it.
So does anyone know when or if a patch is going to be released any time soon to fix some of the bugs?

You honestly have no idea what the game was like before this release and actually how few problems there were compared to what they hit on release. Sometimes when things are released online, there are major problems day of release due to various different reasons. Game CD releases are 100% different than online releases.

more to come within a couple months easily. one of the official released statements said that they were going to do MUCH more frequent releases instead of the 6 month ones like back in the 2x series.

You cannot change soldier names that show up in the server list. So, if you change clans, ranks, what not, there is no support for changing names. Therefore, you are an inDUHvidual according to the Army. We can only hope they will change their minds and allow name changes plus >15 characters.
My suggestion is thus: If you feel you'll be with 82nd for awhile, create a soldier name like 82nd_Shad Create another soldier name you'd like to work on as an individual outside of a clan. I recommend a short name; they might decide to add clan support or prefixes.
